Until the beginning of the teaching ministry of Jesus of Nazareth, no one on earth prayed the way that Jesus did. In fact the way that Jesus prayed was so compelling that people who had been trained by a master in prayer (John the Baptizer) found themselves yearning to learn more from One who went far deeper in His intercessions. Little did they know as they started out, that this was in fact, “God at Prayer!”

They said, “Lord, Teach Us To Pray…”

Then Jesus gave us what we have come to call “The Lord’s Prayer.”

This “Lord’s Prayer,” the prayer form of those who are disciples of the Lord, is a highway to all of the teaching of Jesus. Actually, rather than a prayer that we are simply to pray as an exact form, it is a rote memory prayer, an outline, a framework and a launching point to enable us to “think Jesus’ thoughts after Him,” and “to pray into the leading of Jesus’ Spirit.” It includes summary words to every key teaching, and even every significant action, in our Lord’s ministry.

Each word is an entry point into the deepest heart of our Lord. When the Lord taught us to pray this prayer, His intention was that we would understand what He meant. This module will focus on “slowing down” enough to examine how the Lord’s Prayer works. There are six movements to this astonishing prayer. Each session (including the Sunday service) will focus on just what it was that Jesus understood from the point of those words. In this module we will not only learn what He meant by such things as “heaven”, and “God’s will” and “the kingdom of God, now and not yet” but we will learn how to shape our personal and collective praying around this magnificent model, and to join our Lord in the astounding calling to bring His rule to bear on every part of life itself.

A significant theme that will be brought forward is that the Lord’s Prayer is in fact a “Kingdom versus kingdom” prayer, an intercession that places us in alignment with God’s magnificent purposes to redeem all of our fallen planet from the unclean rule of evil. We are to pray for the kingdom to come—on earth, as in heaven. And when we pray that way, the heart of God is moved, and God sends the answer…

Of course, the teaching builds with each session. After we have examined each of the six themes, and prayed into them, we will end out our time with a season of corporate prayer around each of the key themes.

Plan to join us on the Friday evening, and through our Saturday sessions, for a season of learning just what it was that our Lord meant when He said, “When you pray, pray this way…”
